A standardized extract is processed to guarantee a consistent level of specific naturally occurring compounds from batch to batch, regardless of natural variation in the source plant. Non-standardized extracts can still be labeled by ratio, but without that additional consistency benchmark, potency can vary more from one production run to the next.

What to Look for When Reading an Extract Label

Whatever the plant, a few label details are worth checking before comparing extracts across brands:

  • The ratio itself. Look for a clearly stated ratio (such as 10:1) rather than vague terms like “super strength” with no number attached.
  • Plant part used. Extracts can be made from leaf, root, bark, or other plant parts, and this affects the starting material significantly.
