You can’t deny the effects that a healthy smile has on the people who surround you. However, much like everything else in your body, your teeth become more vulnerable to the effects of aging. This comes as the enamel covering your teeth becomes more fragile as a result of prolonged wear and tear. There’s also the fact that your gums recede and your bone density decreases, creating the perfect conditions for cavities and tooth loss.

However, some age gracefully with radiant smiles intact. Accomplishing this would mean adopting the right kind of lifestyle and using the right approaches that guard your oral health. Your teeth will naturally undergo extensive damage, but there are ways you can delay the process and maintain your smile for as long as possible. Here are a few tips for effective oral health as you age.

1. Elevate Oral Care

Good oral hygiene is essential earlier on, so don’t wait until you’ve retired to develop the right habits. Going beyond brushing at least three times a day, your oral health regimen should also include flossing and continuous hydration. You are more likely than before to experience dry mouth, which could complicate your oral hygiene situation, so be sure to drink enough water during the day and stimulate saliva production by chewing sour gum.

When it comes to cleaning, use ergonomic tools that won’t sprain your wrist. Try using a supersonic cleaner or an electric toothbrush that can help reduce wrist movement, especially if you have arthritis. It’s also important to avoid habits that contribute to dryness, such as drinking sugary beverages, alcoholic products, and smoking. It’s best to start this early before your body enters the advanced stages of aging.

2. Never Miss an Appointment

When it comes down to oral maintenance, you can never go wrong with going on regular dental checkups. Since your teeth are highly vulnerable to decay and damage, you need to discover underlying issues before they take a massive toll on your oral health.

There’s no better time to choose a reliable dentist than now, especially if you’ve been working in an industry that presents a high risk to dental health, such as high-contact sports like mixed martial arts or the food service sector. Be sure to disclose any oral issues you may have and, if prompted by your dentist, the accidents that damaged your teeth and your current lifestyle.

3. Get the Necessary Service

When it comes down to maintaining a perfect smile even in your 50s or 60s, it matters to get the right corrective and preventative solutions. The most basic of these and the most recommended are fluoride treatments. This is crucial to dealing with dental caries, which worsens with age. It’s also important to undergo plaque removal and interdental cleaning to prevent the onset of gum disease. What’s more, you may qualify for implants as an alternative to wearing dentures.

You just need to look for a clinic in your community that specializes in this. If you’re in Istanbul, look for one that’s a well-known provider of dental implants in Turkey. In case you’re wearing dentures, make it a habit to clean them frequently to prevent fungal growth and bacterial buildup.

4. Mind What You Eat

As you age, you need to develop a diet plan that won’t worsen your dental situation. It’s never too late to swap unhealthy foods with meals that won’t accelerate tooth decay and ensure that you get the nutrients you need to prevent infections and tooth loss. If you’ve reached the 60-year mark, you may have to eat as much calcium as needed by your body without resulting in complications.

Dairy products are rich in this nutrient, but these aren’t ideal if you’re monitoring your cholesterol levels. Instead, opt for leafy vegetables and fruits that not only supply ample hydration but also offer a safer alternative source of calcium. It’s also important to consume foods that are rich in antioxidants that can help combat conditions like necrotizing periodontitis.

Endnote

Taking good care of your teeth is important if you want to maintain a healthier smile and avoid wearing dentures. As you enter your golden years, the tips above should help you wear a confident smile that makes you look younger!
