Everything You Need to Know About Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a form of medical treatment involving the treatment of spider and varicose veins that commonly affect your legs. This procedure is minimally invasive and can be performed outside your doctor’s office. However, most people prefer in-office Sclerotherapy treatments that work effectively for patients with small spider veins and varicose veins problems. During this procedure, your healthcare provider will inject a special chemical agent directly into your spider vein or varicose vein. This solution works by altering the lining of the affected blood vessel, causing it to expand and collapse. In this guide, we will tell you why you need to have your Sclerotherapy Glen Rock.

How Do You Prepare for Sclerotherapy?

You need to first consult with your healthcare provider before the actual Sclerotherapy procedure. Your doctor will perform a physical examination and collect information about your medical history. During this exam, your provider will evaluate the affected veins and monitor for any pre-existing blood vessel illness.

While collecting details about your medical history, you may be asked about any allergies you have, pre-existing medical complications or recent diseases, such as blood clots or heart problems, previous treatments for spider veins or varicose veins, and the outcome of the treatment, any supplements or medication you are taking like herbal supplements, aspirin, blood thinners, or iron supplements.

During the Treatment

When you attend your Sclerotherapy procedure, you will be requested to first lie on your back with both of your legs slightly raised. Your doctor will then properly clean the treatment areas with an antiseptic and use a needle to inject the special solution into the affected regions carefully. This treatment solution helps correct spider and varicose veins by altering the lining of the damaged blood vessel. This causes the vein to swell immediately, collapse, and prevent blood flow. Eventually, as the vein is healing, it will form a scar and disappear. For severe varicose and spider veins, doctors often use the foam version of this chemical solution as it covers more surface areas than the liquid version. It is normal to feel cramps as the needle is injected into the damaged blood vessel. After the needle is removed, your practitioner will gently compress and massage the treatment areas to help disperse the chemical agent and prevent blood from reaching the treated vein.

After the Procedure

After your Sclerotherapy treatment, your healthcare provider will request you to lie down for 15-20 minutes to ensure you do not experience an adverse reaction to the treatment solution.

You will be able to take yourself home after the procedure and be able to resume your everyday routines. However, your doctor will recommend that you wear the compression wraps for about one week to help compress the treated veins. To help ensure you receive satisfactory results, your doctor will require you to:

· Avoid exposing any form of heat to the treatment sites

· Avoid taking hot baths

· Avoid direct exposure to the sun’s rays

· Do not take aspirin and any anti-inflammatory medications

· Regularly clean the treatment areas with warm water and mild soap
