Mass Spectrometry Helps Confirm Identity

Purity and identity are related but separate questions.

A sample can produce a relatively clean chromatogram while still requiring confirmation that the dominant compound is actually the intended peptide.

Mass spectrometry provides another layer of information by measuring molecular mass. Researchers can compare experimental mass data with the expected molecular characteristics of the peptide being studied.

This makes mass spectrometry particularly useful when multiple peptide materials are handled within the same laboratory.

Maintaining clear sample labels, lot records, and preparation documentation alongside analytical data can substantially reduce the risk of confusing one material with another.

Analytical testing becomes more useful when it can be tied to a specific lot.

Certificates of Analysis, commonly referred to as COAs, may contain information such as:
